New range of lights. Brooklyn based design studio Workstead just brought out a new light range. I love the simple, functional, yet elegant design of the Orbit lamps. The lamps feature a single or double spun brass disc, which orbits like a planet around a single glowing bulb. It can be arranged in a variety different orientations, reflecting the changing landscape of light throughout the day. The table lamp's base comes in three varieties of stone, including Carrara, Green Marble and Travertine. A little piece of art! ...

The lightness of iron | A courtyard in the former industrial area of Milan houses the laboratory and home of Antonino Sciortino, an artisan-artist, who has been able to reinterpret the ancient art of ironworking into a modern design language. Born in Sicily, he began to learn the craft at the early age of eight in the familiy's blacksmith's shop. Simultaneously he developed a passion for dance, leading to a successful career as a dancer and choreographer. At the age of forty he made a U-turn and started a new artistic adventure, returning to his roots as a metalsmith. Still connecting with his past, the lightness of dance is expressed in his iron works. This month Elle Decor Italia freatured his light flooded apartment, showing his artistry and sense for harmony and modernity. ...

Jaydon Moore at Design Miami | One of my highlights at this year´s Design Miami at Art Basel was American artist Jaydon Moore. His work is motivated by the search of hidden values in objects of daily use. With more and more mass-produced things in our lifes, memory and values transported throug heirlooms become more important and relevant again. The worth of an object is not only mesured by the value of it´s materials, but by it´s patina and wear, representing different layers of memory. For Jaydon the past still lives in an object - „nothing is lost, only given a new history“. He deconstructs, reassembles and alters silver tableware into new images. His pieces are poetic forms, addressing the meaning and value of memories. ...

Architectual lines | I love how the geometry of the stone floor and tiles create a harmonious interplay. The presence of the bathing women and the soft waves and whirls of the water breack the linearity, playfully bluring the grid and bringing to live the whole scene. ...

Vintage icons and contemporary design highlights set in a spectacular ex-industrial space // For this years Salone del Mobile Nina Yashar, founder of one of Italy’s most wonderful collectable design galleries, Nilufar, transformed her furniture storage in a giant showroom. The imposing space centers around an atrium, surrounded by three levels of steel balconies. The dramatic structure, designed like an over-proportioned doll’s house, features open interconnected rooms, accessible by steel staircases and framed by enormous velvet curtains. The regularity of the booth like rooms are the perfect backdrop for Yashars eclectic collection of mid-century gems and stunning contemporary design. Each room is curated with a well balanced mix of iconic vintage pieces from Gio Ponti, Angelo Mangiarotti, Gaetano Pesce, Piero Fornasetti, Franco Albini and contemporary design objects by Lindsey Adelman, Michael Anastassiades, Pierre Marie Agin, Michele Balestra, Bethan Laura Wood, Massimiliano Locatelli, India Mahdavi, etc. etc. The depot is prone to become another institution in Milan’s flourishing design world. ...

Lighting Objects //   New York based design studio Apparatus presented some of their statement lighting fixtures and accessories at this years Milan design week in a charming space at Via Santa Marta. The pieces are born from playful experimentation with vintage lighting components and the use of aged brass, etched glass, leather and porcelain. The combination of sculptural forms with hand-worn materials, result is a warm glow that is at once timeworn and thoroughly modern. ...

Restrained interior designs // Swooning over the elegant cosiness of these color restrained interior spaces. It is all about: muted grey surfaces // warm tones // natural stone // wood // bronze // soft upholstery // straight minimalism ...
